This was purchased to aid in the refinishing of an old piece of furniture. Although the Black and Decker Matrix system is appealing in concept, it is not a reliable system for serious work. It was adequate for our purposes, which was a simple home improvement project. The pads are well-fitting on the sanding attachment, and they do their job well, but I found that the sander did not contact the surface as flush as I would have liked, and as a result, you will not see the most consistent wear across the pad. The fact is, it does work, and our project was a complete success.
The benefit of not having to purchase and store a second tool outweighs the disadvantages of this device’s less-than-optimal efficiency. Because I don’t use a sander very often, I’m not bothered by it. If you’re going to be sanding a lot, you’ll want to invest in a dedicated sander.
