I’m pleased with the good deal I found and the quick and painless shipping I received. Essentially, it is a variable speed die grinder (unlike the Bosch DG250C also purchased on Amazon so BEWARE, that one is mislabelled). The Metabo collet system, on the other hand, has left me feeling underwhelmed. Yes, this is installed in a custom tool, but it was immediately apparent that the collet was not running very accurately. I used a dial test indicator to measure the runout of the collet arbor seat, and it came up with 0.002″ runout. This is completely acceptable. While installing the collet/nut with an accurate ground 0.250″ shank gripped in the tightened collet, the shaft had +.015″ runout when the collet was tightened to a proper tightness. To put it another way, the collet bore itself is out of alignment. I tried cleaning out any debris and gently lapping the slits and chamfer to see if there were any burrs, but there was absolutely no improvement. Even though this is a custom machine as opposed to free-hand grinding, you might not notice the difference in my particular installation. However, this was a disappointment for what is normally a high-priced German instrument.

The other thing I learned is that the nut and collet are one integrated assembly, not two separate parts. They are not particularly easy to come by. There are none on Amazon, but there are a few on Ebay for 30-50 dollars. So don’t let it slip away. I’ve seen some 6mm (European) versions and other sizes available that might be useful, but they’re even more expensive than usual. As a result, I am dissatisfied with what I perceive to be a lack of Metabo parts support in North America. If anyone has any helpful links or pointers in this regard, I’d greatly appreciate it. The motor and overall construction are excellent, but they are no better than a Bosch or Makita, in my opinion.
