This drill and impact driver is currently on sale for $59.99, which includes a single battery, a charger, and a selection of low-cost bits packaged in a blow-molded case. I was interested to see how it compared to the other name-brand drills and impact drivers I currently own.
The DCD771 is Dewalt’s cheapest offering, and it is priced at a pittance of $99.99. Keeping the price in mind, I directly compared it to it.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that this was, in many instances, superior to the Dewalt. AND it was $40 less expensive.
The Dewalt drill does not have a brush and is significantly larger and clunkier in appearance. It weighs almost a pound more than this Newtall drill, which is impressive. If you use it frequently, that extra pound can cause significant fatigue. Because of the improved over-molding on the handle, the Newtall is more balanced and comfortable. The ergonomics are flawless.
Of course, not everything is rosy. When compared to the Dewalt, you do sacrifice battery quality at this price point, and as a result, the long-term operation of this drill remains in doubt.
The other thing to think about is whether you want to expand on this system in the future and add new tools that will run off the same battery. Newtall does not offer as extensive a selection as any of the major brands. If you’re considering purchasing this, you should be someone who will never want or need any other cordless tools in the future, because there isn’t much room for advancement within this brand.
The trigger on this Newtall drill is the final point of contention for me. While there is a slight lag between pulling the trigger and the drill actually doing something, there is no noticeable difference. Aside from that, modulating speed with the trigger is difficult due to the weight of the spring and the overall temperamental nature of the device itself. Eventually I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but if it had a better trigger, this would easily be a 5 star game because it’s actually quite good. This is especially true for the money!
