SHEAR CUTTING FIBER IS PACTOOL INTERNATIONAL.

For cutting HardiPlank, the shears worked very well. I used it to cut lengths, as well as to rip lengthwise for the width of the starter and top course. Speedy: It’s much faster than the diamond-grit jig saw with the diamond-grit blade. The jigsaw made a very smooth edge, but it took a very long time to do so. These shears have a slightly rough edge, but that’s fine for the parts of the body that aren’t visible. All cut edges should be primed before painting.

The shears cut a strip about 1/4″ wide. Each edge of the cut is 1.5″ from the edge of the sole plate edge guide that corresponds. For this project, I clamped an 8-inch rafting Square 7 inches from the cut line. Then I ran the edge of my shear’s sole plate/shoe along that. For most things, cutting by hand isn’t very difficult. But cutting by hand isn’t very easy. With another plank, I would try to make both ends factory-made, and then cut the end by trim.

Place another plank on either side of the first one, then stack four planks 1.5″ from the cut line. Because the factory edges have small rough spots, be careful. The guide shoe will get stuck a little. Make sure to be patient and move the shear head along the guide planks in a smooth way. Next time, I’ll use a 2×4 or other smooth piece of wood as a cutting guide instead of another piece of wood.

In order to move the planks and set up cutting guides, two people would be much better than one person.

I used an older Milwaukee M18 1/2″ drill/driver and it didn’t have any trouble with the shears. Use the fastest drill speed you can. The shears make very little dust that gets into the air. A little dust and 1/4″ wide curled strips are left behind as waste. Before the curly strips get stepped on and make a lot of cement dust, you should clean up. The jigsaw made more dust than a circular saw, but the dust was only near the saw, not all over the room. Jigsaws are very good at cutting, but they are very slow. It takes two minutes to cut a 6.26″ plank of wood to the right length. A pair of shears takes about 15 seconds to cut with.

The shears are the only way to cut HardiPlank quickly and with little dust. You get good edges in a reasonable amount of time and there is very little dust in the air. Because they’re hard to control, you should use a strong guide to make sure your cuts are straight.

There are full-tool shears that are much more expensive. This shear head is a lot less expensive. With any drill with 18/20 volts, you can work on your project. Make sure to really tighten the chuck on the head stem, because it likes to get itself out. This shears are what I’ll be using for the siding I’m going to be doing in the next few months. I’ll always have a jigsaw on hand as a backup. Worth it.

HardiPlank looks great on the house. When we cut the ends or edges, we generously sprayed them with primer and put them up right away. We didn’t wait for the primer to dry. There was even more we could have done. We primed each nail head, just in case (I used the pre-primed planks which I think is the easiest version to work with).
