3-1/4 Horse Power: Makita’s new machine has a lot more power than before. A variable speed router has a powerful 15 amp motor that can go from 9,000 to 22,000 RPM. This makes it easy to cut. There is a plunge depth range of 0-2-3/4 inches, which makes it easy to get into the work piece. It has linear ball bearings that make for a smooth plunge stroke and better performance. It comes with an electric brake for more work. There are three quick release plunge depth stops for even more precision. The electronic speed control keeps the speed the same.

I’ve had this router for two years. It’s one of many routers I use. It’s mostly good, but there’s one big flaw (that can be fixed).

Good ideas.

The trigger position is just right for me. Do not look away from your work when you turn on the router.

In general, Makita makes good power cords.

Festool, on the other hand, has the smoothest plunge action that I haven’t seen in any other tool.

When you connect a PC template guide, it’s easy and safe.

The plunge measurement is very easy to do, and it only takes a little bit of force.

The control to keep the plunge depth in place is well-placed and easy to get to use.

The turn on is easy.

The electronic turn-off brake works very well, though (though it does torque the entire router with the rapid rotation stop..

The bad ones.

It doesn’t go “sproing” if there are two nuts: a cap nut and a wing nut (without ears). It looks like nylon, but both of them are made of plastic. They are very weak, and they haven’t held up at all in my hot summer garage workshop. Before long, the wing nut broke and the cap nut stripped (without being manipulated). You can buy steel wing nuts and cap nuts (M10-1.5) from Albany County Fasteners, and you’ll be back to work in no time at all. This isn’t my favorite router (My Festool Q1400 is.). As for the high power, I do like this router. That Makita would make nuts so weak that they can’t hold up against the plunge springs makes me angry. So, only 4 stars for a router that, for this price, should have gotten 5 stars, but it did.
