My intent was to us the saw to cut out blades and then put saw and table away when not in use. Good decision, I use that little saw for so many things. Cutting pins, trimming handle materials, cutting bolster material, opening steel packages from Aldo and the list goes on and on.

An angle grinder is a hand-held power tool used for cutting. Many different types of cutting wheel can be mounted on an angle grinder but they’re all essentially grinding wheels. Our vertical bandsaw is used more for cutting shapes than cutting to length.

I have almost everything, 4 by 6 bandsaw, portaband, portaband on a stand, angle grinder with a thin cutting wheel usually fitted, another angle grinder with a regular abrasive wheel usually fitted, a dremel usually fitted with a cutting disc, an abrasive disc chop saw use of a circular saw if Ineed to cut Aluminium sheet, and a bench mounted shear for thinner stuff. This 100yr old machine will virtually silently cut its way through anything within its capacity and turn itself off once the job is done. I have until now just used an angle grinder to roughly cut out my knife blanks from ground flat bar and then grind to the line on the bench belt grinder and that is working out ok. I have been wanting to pull the trigger as it were on one of these portable metal cutting bandsaws for a few months but trying to justify the cost for doing the same job as my angle grinder. Metal cuttin bandsaws are more than worth their cost, you won’t be throwing away as much materials as with an angle grinder.

We originally didn’t want a lot of rules, because we thought this was a pretty straightforward sub. Some posts have shown there needs to be a few. Any machine posts should be focused on the actual tool that’s being used as a result of the machine.

If you buy a metal bladed chop box you can just buy wood blades and be able to cut wood, just not in the metal area so there is no flammable saw dust from wood….its more versatile than an abrasive cut off saw for hobby. Even if you go with the abrasive cut off saw its 100% better than the 4 inch angle grinder for both speed and accuracy. Never having tried another chop saw I am going to venture out on a limb and say it’s pretty awful as chop saws go, but I don’t regret this particular purchase, it fills a need for a reasonable price point.

I have already purchased pretty much everything I need to start fabricating but I am completely stuck at which saw to purchase. “So in all my research it seems like most people prefer a carbide steel blade for a saw, but the downsides seem to be that if you have to cut rebar or something fairly hard, you run the risk of breaking teeth off a $100+ blade, or at least dulling it very quickly. Then my most recent research brought me to benchtop band saws… yes they are a little pricey but I want to get something that can cut through almost any metal and not have to worry about it breaking a blade.
