I was able to get this hood up and running after I did it. It was a real pain in the neck to put on my Delta XL-10 table saw, but this was not because the part itself was bad. In the process of putting things together, I tried to be too clever and ended up in a corner.

It was too small to just bolt to the bottom of the saw’s case. So I cut a piece of 1/2″ plywood to the right size and cut out the middle, leaving a square “ring” of plywood. I then attached the hood to the ring so that the hood would be on the “inside” (i.e., the hood will hang from the plywood ring by its 1″ offset lip).

Attached an adapter (POWERTEC 70136 4 inch to 2 inch reducer) at this time so that I could connect my shop-vac to the hood through an adapter that was already in place. I screwed all of the parts together, adding a bead of caulk to all of the places where they would meet. This will keep water from getting in. Before I put the assembly on the saw, I let the caulk dry (which I had already unbolted from the stand).

The bad news is that now that I had everything in place, I couldn’t get to the bolt and nut places inside the saw housing (my new hood assembly was blocking the previously wide-open bottom of the saw). To get longer connecting bolts and drill holes in the plywood ring, I had to think ahead, but it was hard to get the bolts down from inside the saw.

After a few hours of fighting with it, I was able to get three of the four bolts tightened to my liking. In the fourth one, I used a wall anchor and fender washers to get it to fit a little better than it should have. Before tightening the bolts, I sprayed caulk on the surfaces where the saw and plywood and plywood and the legs meet.

The bottom line is that, even though I was a dumbass, the hood and adapter work as they should. There is still some dust coming out of the standard clearance plate, but it is much less than before the hood was put on. Nothing is coming out of the bottom. I still need to seal up some other places on the saw housing, but I’m already very happy with the results so far.
