An induction moto. It has 2.5 Amps, 1725 RPM, a blade that is 1/8-Inch by 3/8-Inch, and a table that is 11-3/4-Inch by 11-3/4-Inch. For example, the Dust Port is 2 inches wide. The Throat Depth is 9 inches; the Max. Depth at 90 degrees is 3-5/8 inches; at 45 degrees it is 2 inches wide. 50 pound.
In this case, I could only afford to spend about $100 on a good 14-inch saw. Some time ago, I had a 9-inch Delta-labeled saw that was worthless and had nothing in common with the better Delta saws. That made me wonder if I could get a good saw for that price. So many cheap bandsaws for people who like to make things for fun are out there now, and I hoped that at least one of them was good enough to use. Choosing: I spent a lot of time reading reviews on this site and other places before I made my choice.
All of the Central Machinery 9″ saws that are sold under different names are thought to be the best. You can tell it is more durable because it is made of tubular steel. The cheap saws are made of cast aluminum. One of its other features is that it has spring blade tensioning, a 1/2 HP motor, belt drive, and a lot of flexibility. You can even adjust the lower wheel bearing if you need to, but mine didn’t need any work. I looked at the Harbor Freight version, which is on sale and would cost less than the Powertec-labeled version, but a trip to an HF store and a lot of reviews convinced me that Powertec has better quality control than the Harbor Freight version, which is on sale.
In the end, I bought a used, “Like New” unit, which cost me $15 less than the normal price. This word hasn’t been used at all. I think someone opened the box and put it back together. To start, I took the saw out of the box and put it on top of my work bench. Putting it together took about 20 minutes, and it was easy to cut through 1″ oak without any problems. In my case, I don’t have a dial indicator to check for runout, but I don’t see any extra vibration or wobble in the blade’s blade. If you take your time and don’t push too hard, the steel pins that hold the blades in place won’t be a big deal. I wouldn’t try to resaw planks with it, or cut tropical hardwood boards that were more than 2″ thick. Powertec’s 3/8″ 6tpi blade came with my saw. Most of my sawing is done with long, straight cuts on small pieces of hardwood, so I also bought the blade. Thanks to the blade tension lever, it was easy to switch blades, and the 3/8″ blade cut straighter and faster. You should buy one with this saw.
If I were a real woodworker, I’d probably skip this and buy a bigger Jet. For my needs, which are mostly bowmaking and some musical instrument work, this should be fine. If you know what it can and can’t do, it’s not bad for the money.
