If you’re looking for a bandsaw to make cuts on thinner pieces of wood and don’t plan on doing any resawing, then the 1 1/2 or 1 3/4hp motor offered on many of the 12″ and 14″ bandsaw will be more than enough. While this bandsaw may be out of many woodworker’s price range it is the best combination of features and price that we can recommend in a full sized bandsaw. The Rikon 10-326 Deluxe Bandsaw is a pretty similar bandsaw to both the Laguna 1412 in style and specs.
Woodcraft will have the Rikon 10-326 for 15% off in march, resulting in a final price of approximately $850. That’s a $150 difference between the two saws, but I’m not sweating. As mentioned, the Laguna comes with ceramic guides but the Rikon guides look like they’re stout and easy to adjust. The sale really makes it difficult to spend the extra dough for the Laguna and Rikon has stepped up their game.
For bowl cutting blades, the Lennox Diemaster Bimetal blades can’t be beat. For cutting slabs, a 1 1/4 blade with teeth about 3/4 inch apart is best. If you never want to cut higher than 12 inches, then the smaller bandsaws with a riser block can work, but if you cut the full 12 inches high, 1 hp is a bit under powered.
They’re extremely familiar with both the Laguna ceramic guides and the Rikon guides and prefer Rikon’s.
