Review of SawStop.
I’ve only had it for a couple of weeks, so this is a preliminary assessment. I’ve used it to cut a couple hundred feet of lumber, which is enough to get a good impression of it, but not nearly enough to make a judgment on its longevity and dependability. It’s a replacement for my old DeWalt 7480 table saw, which was too small.
Likes.
– Simple to assemble and move around. When cutting sheets of ply, the larger table and heavier weight provide significantly more stability.
– Compatibility with a data stack of 8 inches.
– The presence of safety features. The importance of fingers cannot be overstated.
– Port for sawdust on the blade guard (but, see below…
– A storage compartment for accessories is built in.
– A single turn is required to raise and lower the blade.
– The riving knife and plastic blade shield are simple to swap out.
– Miter slot in the shape of a .
– A micro-adjustment mechanism for the tilt of the blade. You can accurately dial in the blade with the help of a digital protractor.
When not in use, it folds up and is stored against the wall of my workshop. This is the main reason why I chose this over the Contractor version of the software.
Dislike.
– The miter gauge is completely ineffective. Not something I’d expect from a $1500 table saw, but something I’d expect from a Skill table saw. Save the aluminum bar and use it to construct a jig of some sort, and toss the rest of the materials. My Incra is in perfect working order.
• The single turn blade raising feature makes it difficult to cut a dado to an exact depth due to the limited range of motion.
– When locking and unlocking the fence, the fence always moves a small amount. That was never a problem on my DeWalt, which moves the fence with a rack and pinion mechanism rather than with a chain. In order to adjust the SawStop, you must first slide it to the correct location and then tap it into place. It’s not nearly as accurate as the original.
The saw dust port on the blade guard is still not compatible with a hose that I’ve found so far. Great concept, but, seriously, people..
With the included blade and when connected to a dedicated 20A outlet, it can be quite loud when cutting through 2×4 lumber. I’m looking forward to seeing how it performs with 8/4 maple.
When you turn it on for the first time, it goes through a lengthy self-check sequence. I’m surprised that it can’t be completed in less time.
– It’s a little louder than my DeWalt, but not by much.
Conclusion..This saw is intended to be used on a construction jobsite. If you’re planning on using it for cabinetry or precision woodworking, the Contractor version, or even better, the cabinet saw, would be a better choice. Unfortunately, due to limited space, I’ll have to make do with this one..you can still adjust it to make precise cuts, but it will take you longer. The only thing that justifies the high price is the high level of safety features, which are well worth the money.. No one who has lost body parts has woken up thinking that today is the day to go on a crash diet because it only takes an instant. However, if this is not important to you, you can save a significant amount of money by purchasing a conventional saw instead.
Update on 6/12/2020: I wanted to add one more comment about the fence before I sign off. When the fence is unlocked, the rear of the vehicle moves approximately 1/4 mile “away from the edge of the blad. The front of the fence remains stationary. When you return the fence to its original position, the rear moves back into position. To put it another way, locking the fence and sticking something against the blade will not result in a cut that is the same width as unlocking the fence and locking the fence. In fact, the fence jams the piece against the blade quite forcefully, and if you have a thin blade, you can see the blade deflect slightly as a result.
If you accurately calibrate the scale (which is simple, but mine was almost 3/32 inch off), you should be fine “You can then measure your piece, move the fence to that measurement, lock it, and proceed to cut with the blade. It’s a shoddy workaround for a problem that shouldn’t even exist in the first place.
