In order to remove 800 square feet of Mexican tile, I had an SDS MAX (6.1 ft-lbs) and an SDS Plus (2.2 ft-lbs) at my disposal. I experimented with a variety of bit and tool combinations in order to find the most effective one. The 2″ chisel from this collection, combined with an SDS Max hammer drill, proved to be the most effective for removing the tile. After that, I used a 4″ thinset removal bit in conjunction with an SDS plus hammer drill to scrape away any remaining thinset. When it came to removing thinset, I discovered that the smaller SDS plus bit performed significantly better than the larger 6″ SDS Max bit. I believe this is due to the fact that the SDS plus, despite having lower energy, has twice the frequency of the SDS (5,800 bpm versus 2,900 bmp for the SDS max). The higher frequency appears to be more effective at removing the thinset. I was able to complete the removal of 800 square feet of tile and thinset in approximately 13 hours using this combination (approximately 60 square feet per hour).
