I made the decision to replace an old Schlage gate lock on our iron courtyard gate with a Kwikset Smart Key lock because it was in such bad shape. I had anticipated that there would be some variation in the depth of the latch, and indeed there was. This necessitated the relocation of a hole of approximately 2″ diameter and 3/8″ closer to the edge of the gate in the steel plates on either side of the gate on each side of the gate. These steel plates were probably 1/16″ or more thick, and they were clearly reinforced for use with the locks.. Even though it required the use of two different battery-operated drills on two different days (and the batteries had to be recharged), it only necessitated the use of this single burr. I wish I had taken a photo, but I hope my words are able to convey my thoughts effectively. The burr is still in usable condition.
