A Skil Drill was purchased after years of using an old Makita Drill 6213d drill that I had outgrown. Having only used the Skill for a single day, I was extremely impressed with its power and features. The results of my testing are detailed in the section below.

— This is extremely effective. The drill has a torque rating of approximately 350 ft-lbs. You might be wondering what that means. As a driver, it means you can snap or tear out nearly every screw and bit before the drill comes to a stop or twists out of your grip. Take, for example, a couple of large screws in a vice with the factory charge showing one bar on the battery. With the torque setting at 17, the Skil drill quickly snapped off the screw heads (see photo)……yet another example of how powerful this drill is. That is why it is critical to use the torque setting in order to avoid stripping out or snapping screw heads.

— Well Balanced: I found the Skil to be well balanced in my hand, even with the larger 4Ahr battery. When I was trying to insert the drill bit into a screw head, I felt like I was fighting against the weight of the drill.

Because the grip is rubberized and has a nice texture, it is comfortable to hold the drill securely in my gloved hands. It is also the perfect size for my gloved, large hands.

It is simple to change the forward/lock/reverse slide switch with the same hand that is holding the drill by simply pushing it with the forefinger or thumb. — Convenient controls. The slide switch has a center position that prevents the on switch from being activated. The center lock is probably never going to be used, but it’s simple enough to just slide it through for reverse or forward when necessary. On the rear of the motor, there are lights that indicate forward and reverse movement. Once again, this is extremely convenient because I never remember which way the switch is set until I turn the bit.

Five different settings for the trigger speed: The Makita I mentioned above had a linear speed trigger button, which meant that the speed would change linearly in response to where the trigger button was pressed. The Skil is digital, which means that there are five different speed settings that change depending on where the trigger is pressed. Small changes in the trigger depression will cause the head speed to increase in 5 increments from the slowest to the fastest, and of course, when you release the trigger, the head speed will reverse. Due to the short trigger span and the fact that there are five speeds, this took almost no getting used to.

A slide switch is located at the top of the drill, which allows you to adjust the speed range of the trigger. The number 2 is the absolute fastest. If you are in the middle of using the drill, you would change this by using your non-trigger hand.

— A large number of Torque Settings: 17 in total. It is critical to set this correctly in order to apply the maximum torque to the screw without stripping it. I’ll go as low as I can with my hand to keep it from falling. A large screw head can be easily snapped off with the highest number of 17. (See illustration.

— I’ve never had a drill with a work light before, so that was a nice touch. That’s really nice of him. On the Skil, the light shines up from the lower handle and illuminates the work in a pleasing manner. In daylight or bright ambient lighting, you wouldn’t notice it at all, but in a dark, shadowy corner, it’s a great convenience to have.

— Check the Battery’s Charge Level: There is a button on the battery that allows you to check the battery’s charge level, which is useful if you are stuck somewhere without a charger and a dead battery.

While not in use, the head locks, allowing you to twist the locking knob to tighten or loosen a new drill bit or bit set. — Auto locking hea. Once again, this is extremely convenient.

— A positive locking click sound is heard as the battery is slid into position. There are also large, beefy contacts connecting the battery to the drill, ensuring that there is no current choke point to restrict the amount of power.

The Skil Cordless drill/driver has exceeded my expectations, and I could not be happier. In terms of battery longevity, only time will tell, and I’ll report back after several months of use.
