I was in the market for a new work light as well as an oscillating tool, and instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a Milwaukee, I decided to go with this brushless Skil instead. This provided me with an additional set of tools for not much more money than I would have spent on a single Milwaukee hammer. I also wanted to go with a brushless motor.
The good news is that these Skil tools are extremely reasonably priced. They are practically the same size and weight as a standard 20v set, which is disappointing for a 12v (which is comparable to Milwaukee’s m12 line) (in this case Milwaukee M18 seen in picture). What’s the point of getting a 12v set if the size is the same as the M18/20v sets, you might wonder. This might be significant to some people.
Another drawback for me was the sound of the drill set’s motor, which I found to be distracting. When they were in use, they made a distinct squealing sound (which might go away with more use). I’m not referring to the electric buzzing sound you hear when it first gets power, but rather to the motor itself spinning up and down.
At the end of the day, the Skil is an excellent value for the money, and it does exactly what it is intended to do, which is especially important for the DIY crowd. Because the form factor and weight (without the battery) are the same as the brushed Milwaukee, I can’t see myself using them in lieu of the brushed Milwaukee. Unless they are on sale, I would recommend upgrading to the 18v/20v line of power tools instead, as there isn’t much of a difference in size or weight between the two lines at this point.
