I am in the process of building a chainsaw mill and will possibly need to drill a hole in the bar. I read in a book years ago that the secret is to lie bar on top of another old bar while drilling, that way the heat dissipates to the other bar which is somehow better, otherwise it may harden just as you are breaking thru, due to high heat and air cooling(or something). If you don’t have access to a drill press, you must keep that bit perpendicular to the bar you are drilling.
If you intend to drill anywhere on the bar a normal drill bit is not only going to fail, it’s going to get damaged trying. Drill at a slow speed without applying too much force, preferable using plenty of cutting oil because otherwise the tip can easily get hot enough to melt the brazing. An alternative to drilling is to use a carbide burr in a pencil grinder.
