If your grinder is smoking, you should check the armature for any build up of dirt and debris, shorts and performance. Separate the armature from the field by pulling the armature out. Remove the nut securing the armature gear and remove the gear.

Good luck with it, I am having the same issues with my B&D grinder just to find out it is pretty much a throw away grinder if you have any problems with it. “I’ve tried the Bosch angle grinders, not impressed, but their 3/8” 90 degree corded angle drill, is the best, I’ve ever owned. Don’t know what the difference in gear ratio is but the higher amp grinder starts to growl a bit more under stress but this is prolly a issue of both are cheap low budget grinders brands.

I overworked my Makita 4-1/2″ angle grinder and let the smoke out. I let it cool down, but it makes bad sounds and runs slow if at all. I called the Makita service center and they said the basic inspection was free, but if the electrics were toast, it was unlikely that it could be fixed.

My grinder was acting funny , I set it down to go get a differant one , go back and it was on fire. I quickly unplugged it and threw it out in the snow bank.
