Full disclosure: I hate shop vacs, but acknowledge that they have jobs that they are well suited to knock out. Unless there was water involved, I would almost always prefer a broom over the noise, awkwardness, and self-disassembling tubes of a shop vac. But I am getting older and decided to see if this one was better than the stuff I had used in the past.

Some assembly required: Not too difficult to assemble. The hammer-on things to retain the wheels on the axel were annoying and seemed like a questionable choice compared to a bolt or even a retaining ring, but seem to work. Other than that, you’ve got 4 screws to put in and a pair of covers to beat in place with a mallet. (Tools need: phillips screw driver, standard hammer, rubber mallet..

Power on: the beast has a massive rocker switch which is good in case it gets away from you and your vac starts sucking up the cat’s tail – it is easy to find. When you turn it on, the motor makes plenty of noise, but it is tolerable and lower in pitch than what I remember from much smaller devices.

It’s all about suction: This shop vac has a lot of power. I am running it with a collection bag and it still picks up fairly good sized bits of gravel. The car attachment really gets in and grabs hold – having a handle that allows you to bleed off some of the power can be helpful when you are ‘stuck’ on carpet or a seat cover.

All in all, this is one quality piece of gear. It still suffers from pipes and tubes falling apart, but with reduced frequency. It also suffers from the eternal hassel of power wires getting in the wheels and the need to move the vac around constantly – but the vac itself has a handle that keeps you standing upright which makes it easier on your back.

I extended mine by buying a handle with a flow control ring. I also got a wider head attachment with bristles on it since I wanted to keep plastic attachments off of painted surfaces. The 2.5″ diameter accessories are not cheap, but the handle is totally worth it.

I still hate shop vacs, but if I have to use one, this one is pretty nice. (Star deducted for being a @##! shop vac.)
