More info about what would make a chainsaw run backwards

Took me a couple seconds to realize it was running backwards and shut it off but it ran good with no strange noises. I’ve heard of a saw running backwards, I don’t remember what would cause it to do it but that particular saw would do it fairly often. Also I’ve heard about people stalling a Detroit 2 stroke diesel powered truck on a hill and have it start running backwards.

Yes, 2-stroke engines will run backwards…not very well, but they will run backwards. Bumped the starter button one day, popped it into first gear, let out on the clutch and almost went over the handlebars as it lunged backwards throwing rocks between my feet!!! Also had a Detroit Diesel run backwards once. All I can say is if you do happen to get a saw to run backwards……DON’T pull the starter rope with it running!!

Rotax Electronic Reverse found on 2-stroke powered Ski-Doo snowmobiles starting in around 2002. Push the “Reverse” button, the engine almost shuts off, but then re-fires itself running backwards. Be careful with the throttle because there is no rev limiter in reverse and the sled could technically go as fast in reverse as it can in forward.

what would make a chainsaw run backwards Related Question:

Can 2 strokes run backwards?

A two stroke can run backwards because the event timing (intake, exhaust, etc) other than ignition is controlled by the piston, and the piston knows only that it’s going up and down, not which direction the crank is turning.

Which way should a chainsaw blade face?

The direction of the chainsaw blade is always the same regardless of the type or model of chainsaw. So the sharp edges of the blade should always face the clockwise direction. If you check from the top, you will notice that the sharp edges are facing the direction opposite the chainsaw body or motor.

How do you tension a chainsaw blade?

Loosen the bar nuts on the side of the chainsaw guide bar. Insert a screwdriver or chainsaw scrench into the Intenz slot of the guide bar. Turn the screwdriver or scrench clockwise to move the guide bar forward to proper chain tension. Perform a “snap” test to ensure proper saw chain tension.

Why would a 2-stroke motor run backwards?

It was common for old 2 stroke engines to spin in a different direction. They do not have valves or cams, so they do not have a clockwork mechanism for synchronizing. It usually happens when the ignition timing is advanced enough to cause the engine to spin in the opposite direction just to synchronize.

What causes an engine to run backwards?

A lack of lubrication and filter intake air results in engine startup getting backwards because of rebound of compression from bumping the starter motor.

What happens if you put a 2-stroke piston in backwards?

On a 2-stroke, there are pins in the ring grooves that keep the rings from rotating.otherwise they would catch in the edge of a port and cause a lot of damage. Obviously you were lucky that the locating pins on the CR piston did not travel across any ports even when put in backwards.

How long should a chainsaw blade stay sharp?

A chainsaw may only need to be sharpened once a year if it is rarely used, but a tool that is frequently used will need to be sharpened regularly to ensure that the blade doesn’t get too dull. On average, a chainsaw blade will retain its sharpness for about 3 hours of actively cutting through wood.

Can you over tighten a chainsaw chain?

There is a tension screw located near the base of the bar on the chainsaw. To tighten the chain, turn it clockwise, and to loosen turn it counterclockwise. Don’t over-tighten the chain as this could cause it to break.

When should I replace chainsaw chain?

Once the wear markers have been met it’s essential to replace the chainsaw chain. Filing past the wear marker will greatly reduce the chain’s cutting performance, and increases the risk of the tooth breaking off. Ideally you should reach the tooth and depth gauge markers at roughly about the same time.

Can 4 stroke engine run backwards?

Usually a four stroke that starts in reverse is pulling it’s fuel and air from the muffler side. Residual fuel from the filling and venting winds up in the muffler. The engine kicks backwards and takes off. You can rotate the housing on a 2C 90 degs left.

Can a 2 stroke run in either direction?

A two stroke will run both directions because the events are controlled by ports in the cylinder and they don’t know which way the engine is turning. Some aviation engines are set up to run the opposite direction so they can have opposite turning propellers on a twin.

Can a lawn mower engine run backwards?

So can your lawn mower engine run backwards? While the answer is yes, your engine running backwards won’t be helpful to you, and is likely to be the cause of internal damage to the flywheel key. If your engine has begun to run backwards, it’s likely you’ve mowed over a large immovable object such as a rock.

What happens if you turn a motor backwards?

What Happens If You Manually Turn An Engine Backwards? It is unlikely that an engine will be damaged by reversing, as the oil pump and possibly the water pump are the only things it can do. It would be a bit of a challenge, but four revolutions shouldn’t hurt it at all.

Can you start an engine backwards?

If I was facing up a steep hill in first gear, and I let go of the gas, the car would stall. After stalling, if I did not hit the brake and did not disengage the clutch, the car should start to roll backwards while still in a forward gear, meaning the engine should theoretically move in the backwards direction as well.

Can diesel engine run backwards?

A diesel engine will run backwards if for some reason it is turned backwards.
